October 2026 Lymphatic Health Hub: DVT, Menopause and Lipoedema

newsletter Oct 01, 2026

Hello and welcome to October

Believe it or not, there are only 80 days until Christmas, and October is shaping up to be a full month on the Australian health calendar.

Several of this month's awareness days connect closely with swelling, circulation and lymphatic health, so I've brought them together in this issue.

So take 5, grab a cuppa and enjoy this month's Lymphatic Health Hub.

World Mental Health Day, 10 October

Connecting with other people plays an important part in our mental health and wellbeing. Social media and messaging apps make it so easy to stay in touch, and for some people they're a real lifeline, but we can risk losing the togetherness that comes from being in the same room.

This year's theme is "Together We Thrive", so why not make a plan to see someone in person, whether it's for a walk, a laugh over a cuppa or a long-overdue hug? This free calendar will get you started with a simple daily activity. How many can you tick off?

If you've been feeling low or disconnected, support is available. Speak with your GP, or call Medicare Mental Health on 1800 595 212 or visit medicarementalhealth.gov.au.

🌍 World Thrombosis Day, 13 October

Can you still have a massage if you have a DVT?

A DVT (deep vein thrombosis) is a clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg, and part of it can break away and travel to the lungs. This year's campaign focuses on women's clot risk across different life stages: pregnancy, hormonal medications and menopause.

If a DVT is suspected or newly diagnosed:

  • avoid massage, MLD and compression of the affected limb until medically assessed
  • once the clot is treated and stable, gentle hands-on therapy may be appropriate with medical clearance
  • remember blood thinners (used to treat DVT) can cause bruising

Apparently, Menopause has its own World Day: 18 October

As a long-time member of both the menopause and lipoedema clubs, 11 years and counting, personally, I think it should be a PJ day.

World Menopause Day

Hormonal changes, including those around menopause, can also be a time when lipoedema first becomes noticeable or progresses. If you’ve noticed your legs becoming heavier, more tender or changing in shape during this stage of life, it’s worth understanding what those changes may mean rather than simply dismissing them as part of menopause.

What Every Woman Should Know About Lipoedema

Menopause brings hot flushes, forgetfulness and broken sleep. But it can also be when a woman notices changes in her body she can't explain. Her legs feel heavier, more painful or more tender. She's told to exercise more and lose weight. She's tried that. For years. And nothing changes.

Could it be lipoedema?

Join me for my final Lipoedema Live webinar to learn more about lipoedema, a condition that affects around 1 in 9 women and, quite frankly, can be incredibly frustrating to live with when it’s still so poorly understood.

I'll walk you through what lipoedema is, your treatment options, compression, movement, self-care, and where to find support.
